VISION 2015 was born after a series of meetings with all the stakeholders in the school during the first quarter of 2009. It very clearly lays out the picture of the school we would like to become over the coming five years. The Board of Governors, in partnership with the staff, is committed to the attainment of this vision. We believe that we are well-placed to reach the heights laid out in this document and that we can attain this through carefully planned and executed strategies.
Our school tag line of “Learning, Growing, Becoming” was developed to support the spirit of this vision statement and speaks of the journey that each of pupils undertakes in our school.
The attainment of this vision lies in seven spheres :
• Ethos
• Academic
• Sport
• Arts and Culture
• Facilities
• Parents
• Staff
ETHOS :
We believe that we should strive to produce pupils who are :
– Well-balanced and well-adjusted
– Confident and happy
– Responsible
– Involved in community outreach through sport, music, drama and academics
– Given opportunity to develop their leadership skills
– Appreciative of their heritage and culturally aware
ACADEMIC :
Our academic program needs to include the following :
– regular field trips
– increased number of languages offered (isiXhosa, Portuguese, French, German and Italian have been mentioned as options)
– a comprehensive entrepreneurship program needs to be integrated into the curriculum
– continued attention to the development of higher-order thinking skills through assessment and curriculum
– the establishment of Hospitality Studies and Agricultural Studies in the High School
– the establishment of a fully-equipped Educational Support Unit staffed by well-trained remedial teachers
– integration of digital technology through the use of Web2.0 tools amongst others
SPORT :
In order to offer a high-quality sports program, the following will need attention :
– The building of a gymnasium in which pupils may participate in gymnastics and various indoor sports – would include climbing wall
– The building of tennis courts
– A well-maintained field(s) for sports such as hockey and cricket
– Offering of “alternative” sports such as archery, golf and adventure sports
– Regular sport clinics need to form part of the sporting year plan
Sport needs to be accessible to all children attending Lanner House but the school also needs to support those children who excel in a particular sporting code.
ARTS AND CULTURE :
As part of offering a balanced educational experience, Lanner House needs to give attention to the following areas :
– The development of a strong, well-resourced and effective arts and culture centre which would include the music, art and drama departments
– A drama club operating from the school's premises
– Arts and Culture integration into the existing core curriculum
– The development of a theatre for productions, music concerts and so on. This facility would also be a fund generator for the school.
FACILITIES :
We dream of a school with the following facilities :
– A fully-equipped, state-of-the-art ICT centre
– After-care facility run by suitably qualified persons
– Counselling rooms / Play-therapy centre
– A fully-functional kitchen for tuckshop, school functions and for funds-generation
– Air-conditioned classrooms
– Interactive technology in all teaching areas
PARENTS :
In order for the school to move forward towards the attainment of Vision 2015 it is imperative that strategies are implemented which will encourage a greater number of parents to support the school in its fundraising and other initiatives.
STAFF :
To attract and keep high-quality staff, the following will need attention :
– The adjustment of staff salaries to market-related levels
– A 13th cheque or profit share scheme when possible
– An individualised professional development strategy for each staff member
– Ongoing staff development through attendance at seminars, workshops, conferences and high-quality input at staff meetings
